Mining companies say the ocean floor is potentially rich in metals like nickel and cobalt used in batteries for electric vehicles, so their extraction will support the global energy transition. Any permitting delay will hurt the prospects of Canada's The Metals Company (TMC.O) (TMC), which has led efforts to exploit seabed minerals in the Pacific. TMC says that while deep-sea mining will have some ecological impact, it would be less damaging than land-based extraction. "The fact is no one has ever mined the sea floor in any major commercial capacity," said Victor Vescovo, an investor and deep-sea explorer who will attend the meeting.

If you took the highest point on land and submerged it, you would still have more than a mile between you and the deepest point in the ocean. The Challenger Deep is the deepest point on Earth. In 1960, oceanographer Jacques Piccard and Lt. Don Walsh descended to the lowest point on Earth, Challenger Deep, at a record 25,979 feet below the surface. Scientists have sent half a dozen unmanned submersibles to explore Challenger Deep including Kaiko, which collected over 350 species on the seafloor between 1995 and 2003.

Hamish Harding, a British explorer aboard the submersible missing in the North Atlantic, acknowledged in a 2021 interview that he had taken on deep-sea missions in the past knowing that rescue would not be an option. At almost seven miles, the Mariana Trench is far deeper than the Titanic site that the submersible was set to visit, which is about two-and-a half miles down. On the 2021 trip, Mr. Harding, a 58-year-old British businessman, and Victor Vescovo, an American explorer, set a Guinness World Record for the longest time spent traversing the deepest part of the ocean on a single dive. Their 4-hour, 15-minute dive also set a record for farthest distance traveled along the deepest part of the ocean. “It was potentially scary, but I was so busy doing so many things — navigating and triangulating my position — that I did not really have time to be scared,” Mr. Harding told The Week.

OceanGate's expeditions to the Titanic wreck site include archaeologists and marine biologists. Gallo identified Nargeolet, a friend who has led multiple expeditions to the Titanic, on Tuesday during an interview with CNN. OceanGate hired the Polar Prince to ferry dozens of people and the submersible craft to the North Atlantic wreck site. CBS journalist David Pogue, who went on the trip last year, noted his vessel got turned around looking for the Titanic.

Billionaire hedge fund boss Ken Griffin paid $8 million for a seat on a Blue Origin space flight. The $8 million Griffin paid represents a $20 million price drop from the first ticket sold for a crewed Blue Origin spaceflight — although one of the passengers on the first flight was Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. Blue Origin didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. A Blue Origin ticket includes training days, on-site accommodation at Astronaut Village in the Texas desert, and the actual flight itself, Insider previously reported. On Monday, Blue Origin announced the passengers for its fifth crewed launch to the edge of space.
